SNOWPLOW DRIVER APPRECIATION WEEKWe’ve been celebrating our Public Works employees this week and saying thank you for all they do to keep our streets and sidewalks passable and safe in the winter months. We even arranged some spring-like weather this week to give them a break from the ice and snow. Even without snow to plow, they stay busy with other things to stay ready for whatever comes their way with these duties: - Check all traffic and pedestrian crossing signals
- Check street lights
- Patch potholes
- Clean piled snow from cul-de-sacs and City parking lots
- Clear storm drains in flood-prone areas
- Maintain City vehicles and equipment
- Make repairs at City buildings
- Inventory parts and supplies
- Preparing for spring projects
- Flushing and repairing hydrants
- Marking utility lines for construction
- Monitoring lift stations and water tower
- Repairing water meters and home services
- Training and continuing education
- Tree trimming

POTHOLE PATCHINGPlease note that City crews fill potholes on a routine basis. When there are freeze and thaw cycles, crews are out on a more frequent basis as these weather cycles cause potholes. To report potholes in EGR, residents can contact Public Works at 616.940.4870 or report them online by selecting the “submit a request” icon on our home page.
TREE MAINTENANCE The city’s right-of-way tree pruning program is underway and will continue throughout the months of March and April in cycle 1 or Monday’s yard waste-compost route. City contractor Good Earth Tree Care will remove and clean up limbs and branches that are removed as part of the pruning process. Certified arborists and foresters target cycle areas of the city for preventative maintenance pruning services. For more information and program area progress map please visit the forestry webpage.
SAVE THE PIPES-DON’T FLUSH WIPES! Did you know products that are labeled “flushable” can lead to clogs and costly repairs to private and public sanitary sewer infrastructure? Just because a product is marked “flushable,” does not mean that it can be flushed because they do not degrade like toilet paper and can end up clogging pipes. Only toilet paper and human waste should be flushed - all other products should be properly disposed. When flushed, products like disinfecting wipes, “flushable” wipes, and paper towels can cause damage to pumps, clog sewer pipes, and systems in your home and neighborhood, and negatively impact the environment. Thank you for continuing to protect our sanitary sewer system and keeping it free from clogs caused by paper products and disinfecting wipes!
