FRED BUNN MULTIUSE TRAILS CONSTRUCTION

Construction of the Fred Bunn Multiuse Trails at Manhattan Park began Aug. 14 and is expected to be completed by late October, weather permitting.

SWIMEGR CLASS REGISTRATION

SwimEGR offers a progression of learn-to-swim classes for young swimmers and beginners, focusing on skill development and safety.

Resident registration for fall classes begins today, and nonresident registration begins Aug. 24.

RHOADES MCKEE REEDS LAKE TRIATHLON

The annual Rhoades McKee Reeds Lake Triathlon is quickly approaching. It’s set for Saturday, Sept. 9 at John Collins Park.

TREE PLANTING PROGRAM

As part of the City’s tree planting program, residents can share the cost 50/50 with East Grand Rapids to plant a new tree in the outlawn of their yard – typically the area between the sidewalk and the street. Place your tree order by Oct. 1, with payment due Oct. 6. Learn more at eastgr.org/forestry.

GASLIGHT VILLAGE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION
Tonight: Get ready for this year’s Taste of East Grand Rapids from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Booths will line Wealthy Street between Lovett Avenue and Lake Drive, offering attendees a sampling of local cuisine from Gaslight Village eateries and featuring local artisans, entertainment for all ages and live music from Jake and Jimmy Band. Tickets for food and entertainment options will be sold through 8 p.m. 

The event, organized by the Gaslight Village Business Association with support from Friends of the East Grand Rapids Library, benefits the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.

EAST GRAND RAPIDS SCHOOLS FOUNDATION
Join friends and neighbors for a delightful evening celebrating East Grand Rapids High School alumni at the Foundation’s Community Service and Distinguished Alumni Awards dinner 6-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13 at the JW Marriott in downtown Grand Rapids.  

Lifelong community supporter Betsy Willey (EGRHS class of 1964) will be honored with the Community Service and Leadership Award. Bill Spindle (EGRHS class of 1981), climate and energy journalist and former Wall Street Journal Middle East bureau chief, will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award.

E-GREEN SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE 
Community members are invited to the E-waste and Foam Packaging Recycling Day event 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Public Works parking lot, 2310 Reeds Lake Blvd. SE.

Community members can recycle printers, video game systems, computers, laptops, tablets, circuit boards, hard drives, cell phones, VCRs, DVD players, wires and holiday string lights. CRTVs, monitors and batteries will not be accepted.

Foam packaging made of expanded polystyrene will be accepted. This is mostly used for food and beverage containers and electronics and furniture packaging. Look for a triangle with the number six inside, as this will be the only type accepted. Packing peanuts will only be accepted in plastic bags, with only one peanut type or color per bag.
